“Arthurdale” The Miner’s Daughter by Gretchen Moran Laskas

Information: “The Reedsville Project, later named Arthurdale after Richard Arthur, from whom the land was purchased, was begun in 1934 as a homestead community. Land was purchased, residents were selected, homes were constructed, more residents were selected, more homes constructed…until there wee 165 homes and several community buildings in rural Preston County, West Virginia.” How does this information quoted from the Arthurdale website compare to the plot line in The Miner’s Daughter?

Just think about living in a little home on a hill with only one room and now you move into a two story home with four bedrooms. I better understand Willa's exitement then ever before.

The Arthurdale site was very interesting. My favorite part was the overview of the 1930s. I really liked reading about all of the things that occurred during that time. For instance, Al Capone being sentenced to eleven years in prison for tax evasion. The information of how Arthurdale began was kind of cool also (having all started with the Reedsville Project -> co-founded by Eleanor Roosevelt.)
